Lung Cancer Project

Patient and service mapping is an approach which is used to get a better understanding of how patients diagnosed with cancer move through the various health services and to look at ways to improve the services.

It involves:

  • capturing and understanding the patient's whole cancer journey
  • establishing what, how and where services are provided
  • identifying key issues for the patient and the service providers
  • identifying possible gaps in service delivery
  • measuring system performance
  • identifying opportunities for service improvement

The project objectives are:

  • To plan, develop and implement best practice in the total management of lung cancer in accordance with the recommendations of the NZ Cancer Control Strategy Action Plan, National Cancer Standards and any other guidance relating to a specific tumour type.
  • To ensure a co-ordinated and consistent approach to the delivery of care, ensuring equity of access to high quality services across the CCN region
  • To provide the regional cancer service providers with advice and guidance for the distribution of resources across the network to ensure commissioning of services is in the best interest of cancer patients
  • To link closely with like steering groups in the other NZ cancer networks to maximise opportunities for sharing information and developing consistent approaches to addressing issues.
