MDM Framework
Central Cancer Network (CCN) has worked with stakeholders to develop a Multidisciplinary Meeting (MDM) Framework to assist with the effective and efficient functioning of existing MDMs and to guide the development of new MDMs as they arise. To support District Health Boards (DHBs) to implement the framework an implementation plan has been developed.
The lung and bowel tumour stream mapping has identified opportunities to develop existing MDM to function in a regional / sub-regional manner, thereby improving overall access and reducing regional inequalities in access to MDM.
The ability to link clinicians via video-conferencing (VC) has been identified as a major enabler to support effective regional MDM. Under the Regional Clinical Services Plan (RCSP) the Chief Information Officers (CIOs) group are due to commence a 6mth trial of enhanced VC facilities within the Central Region DHBs. The trial is of the Telecom videoconferencing solution which allows multi-way VC between participants using existing equipment where possible. The VC solution will support a range of connection options from dedicated VC suites to desktop cameras, and also allow existing units to videoconference. It also supports application sharing to enable the displaying and updating of the clinical agenda or data form as part of the conference.
The regional MDM Development project proposes that CCN work with DHBs to develop the capability of existing MDMs to function effectively in a regional / sub-regional manner and determine if the proposed VC solution being trialled will meet the needs of the region with respect to this. The MDMs to be developed within this project are:
·Capital and Coast based Lung Cancer MDM
·MidCentral based Bowel Cancer MDM
Deliverables from this project will subsequently support DHBs to develop other regional MDMs.
