• Why are we focusing on Pacific Communities?
  • How do we work with Pacific Communities?
  • What work are we involved in?
  • What is currently happening around Pacific health?
  • This section is intended to inform cancer service providers and Pacific Communities about the work that CCN is undertaking to reduce inequalities for Pacific people in cancer control.

    The map below shows the area CCN encompasses in yellow.  Population statistics are available for the CCN region.

    The Cancer Control Action plan acknowledges the Cancer related inequalities of Pacific communities with the main points being;

    • Pacific people have poorer health status than European and Other, though it is slightly better than Maori
    • Cancer mortality is an important contributor to this gap in health status for Pacific peoples, with deaths from cancer having increased in this group, and for Maori, while decreasing in the other ethnic groups
    • Actions to address health inequalities should tackle social and economic inequalities as well as improving access to and effectiveness of health and disability services

    It is intended that there is:

  • standard information about the extent of the inequalities and the CCN approach to undertaking its work; and
  • current information about the projects being undertaken, and regularly updated information about the "Pacific communities and cancer picture"
