Background
The Community Health Development Project aims to conduct a stock take of cancer specific health promotion activity throughout the Central Cancer Network. A clear understanding of which organisations deliver health promotion services may identify opportunities to improve the focus on priority groups, coordination and collaboration in the planning and delivery of services.
The project will focus on:
- Tobacco control
- Skin cancer
- Breast screening
- Cervical screening services.
What is the aim of the project?
The project aims to identify opportunities to improve the integration of planning and delivery of health promotion activities across primary prevention and early detection and to better support community health development.
What is Community Health Development?
Community Health Development* is a dynamic and interactive process assisting the community to identify their health concerns, mobilise resources, and implement solutions and provides an integrated approach to:
1. Understanding Community Context (e.g., assessing community assets and needs)
2. Collaborative Planning (e.g., developing a vision, mission, objectives, strategies, and action plans)
3. Developing Leadership and Enhancing Participation (e.g., building relationships, recruiting participants)
4. Community Action and Intervention (e.g., designing interventions, advocacy)
5. Evaluating Community Initiatives (e.g., programme evaluation, documentation of system changes)
6. Promoting and Sustaining the Initiative (e.g., social marketing, obtaining grants).
7. Addressing Inequalities (Māori models, focussing on priority groups, Treaty of Waitangi, Whānau Ora)
